La Fauxmagerie is a special shop in the UK. Its name comes from French words: faux means "false" or "imitation," and fromagerie means "cheese shop." So, it's like a "false cheese shop"!
This shop is the first of its kind in the UK. It sells delicious plant-based foods that look and taste like regular dairy cheese. You can visit their store in Shoreditch, London, or buy their products online. They also sell to other businesses.
La Fauxmagerie started in 2019. They offer many types of vegan cheese. These include plant-based versions of Camembert, Cheddar, goat cheese, blue cheese, and feta. The shop was created by two sisters from Wales, Rachel and Charlotte Stevens. In 2019, they faced a challenge when a group called Dairy UK questioned their use of the term "plant-based cheese."
How La Fauxmagerie Started
The founders, Rachel and Charlotte Stevens, were looking for better plant-based foods. They found some of their future suppliers at an event called Vegfest UK in 2017. This event celebrates vegan food and lifestyle.
In 2019, the sisters opened their first La Fauxmagerie shop. It was in the Brixton area of London. People loved their products, and the shop became very popular. It grew so fast that they needed a bigger space in just six months!
Growing the Business
In June 2019, La Fauxmagerie moved to a much larger store. This new shop is in the Brick Lane area of Shoreditch, London. At the same time, they also launched their online store. This meant people from all over could buy their vegan cheeses.
La Fauxmagerie has grown a lot in its first three years. They have more products in their store and online. They also started their own brand of special aged plant-based cheeses. In a cool move, they opened London's first vegan wine and cheese bar. It's called The Cheese Cellar and is right below their Shoreditch shop!
In May 2022, La Fauxmagerie started supplying their products to Waitrose supermarkets. This made their vegan cheeses available to even more people. Both Rachel and Charlotte follow a vegan diet. They are still very involved in running their Shoreditch store and creating new products.
