La Fayette (pronounced "Lay-fay-et") is a small village in Stark County, Illinois. It was named after a famous French general, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. You can find it south of Kewanee, just off Route 78 on Route 17|IL-17.

Long ago, La Fayette was a busy place. It had coal mines and farms. There was a general store, a high school, a hotel, a bank, and even a train station. But in the early 1980s, the coal mines closed. The railroad was also removed. Many people moved away, and the village became much quieter.
