La Imperial, Chile facts for kids

La Imperial, also known as Ciudad Imperial, was an important city in what is now Chile. It was started by Pedro de Valdivia on April 16, 1552. The city was named to honor Charles V, who was the Holy Roman Emperor and also the King of Spain at that time.
Sadly, La Imperial was abandoned and destroyed on April 5, 1600. This happened because of the Mapuche Uprising of 1598, a major conflict during the War of Arauco. The ruins of the old city were later called Antigua Imperial. Much later, in 1882, a new city was built in the same area. This new city is known today as Carahue.
Church History of La Imperial
For a time, La Imperial was also an important center for the church.
The Diocese of La Imperial
On May 22, 1563, a special church area called the Diocese of La Imperial was created. This new diocese was formed from a part of the Diocese of Santiago de Chile. It was part of the larger church structure under the Archdiocese of Lima in Peru.
However, the Diocese of La Imperial did not last very long. When the city was destroyed in 1600, the diocese was also closed down in 1603. Its territory was then used to help create a new church area, which is now the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Concepción.
