LaMoure is a small city in LaMoure County, North Dakota, United States. It is the main city, or county seat, of LaMoure County. In 2020, about 764 people lived there.

The city of LaMoure was started in 1882. It was named after Judson LaMoure, an important person in the area's government at the time. Other places like LaMoure County and the cities of Jud and Judson are also named after him.

For a while, LaMoure was one of only eight places in the world that had a special station for the Omega Navigation System. This system helped ships and planes find their way. The station closed in 1997. Today, the station is used by the U.S. Navy for sending very low frequency (VLF) radio messages.

Where is LaMoure Located?

LaMoure is found at 46°21′31″N 98°17′37″W / 46.35861°N 98.29361°W / 46.35861; -98.29361. It sits right on the James River. The city covers an area of about 1.32 square miles (3.42 square kilometers), and all of it is land.

In 2010, there were 889 people living in LaMoure. These people lived in 394 households, with 236 of them being families. The city had about 673 people per square mile.

Most of the people living in LaMoure were White (98.2%). A small number were Native American (1.2%) or from two or more races (0.6%). About 0.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

About one-fourth (25.4%) of the households had children under 18. Half of the households (50.3%) were married couples. Many people (37.6%) lived alone. About 21.1% of those living alone were 65 years or older. The average household had about 2.16 people.

The average age of people in LaMoure was 46.7 years. About 22.6% of residents were under 18. About 26.2% were 65 or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (49.3%) and females (50.7%).

The main school in LaMoure is the LaMoure Public School. It teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The school's sports teams are called the Loboes. In 2018, there were 72 high school students, with about 9 students for every teacher.

Sports Teams

LaMoure is part of a combined sports team called the L-L-M Loboes. This team includes students from LaMoure, Litchville, and Marion.

Football

The Loboe football team has won two State Championships! They won in 1991 and again in 2021. They also played in the State Championship game in 1975 and 2003.

Soccer

An interesting fact about LaMoure is that Arthur Pember, the very first president of the Football Association (which governs soccer in England), lived in the town. He is also buried there.

Volleyball

The Loboe volleyball team has won three state championships. They made history by being the first North Dakota Class B volleyball team to win the state championship three years in a row, from 2015 to 2017.

Boys Basketball

The LaMoure and LaMoure-Litchville-Marion Boys Basketball team has played in the State Tournament 5 times.

  • They placed 3rd in 2008 (as the LaMoure Loboes).
  • They placed 4th in 2013 and 2015.
  • They placed 3rd in 2022 (as the LaMoure-Litchville-Marion Loboes).

Girls' Basketball

The LaMoure-Litchville-Marion Girls' Basketball team has also played in two state tournaments. They finished third in 2015 and sixth in 2020.
