La Neuveville District was a special area in Switzerland. It was one of three districts in the Bernese Jura region where people mostly spoke French. The main town, or "seat," of this district was La Neuveville.

In 2004, about 6,083 people lived in the La Neuveville District. The other two French-speaking districts nearby were Courtelary and Moutier.

On January 1, 2010, these three districts joined together. They formed a new, larger district called Jura Bernois. The new capital of this bigger district became Courtelary.

What is a District?

A district is like a smaller region within a larger area. In Switzerland, a district is part of a canton. Think of a canton as a state or a large province.

The La Neuveville District was part of the canton of Bern. This canton is one of the 26 cantons in Switzerland. Each district had its own main town, which was the center for local government.

The La Neuveville District was made up of five different towns, also called municipalities. These towns worked together as part of the district.

Each of these towns had its own population and land area. For example, La Neuveville was the largest town in the district. It had the most people living there.

History of the District

The La Neuveville District had been an important part of the canton of Bern for many years. It helped manage local services and government for the people living there.

The decision to merge the districts was made to create a more efficient system. By combining the three French-speaking districts, they formed one larger administrative area. This new area is now called the Jura Bernois district.
