The La Selle dusky frog or Mable's robber frog (Eleutherodactylus jugans) is a special kind of frog. It belongs to the family Eleutherodactylidae. This frog lives only on the island of Hispaniola. This island is shared by two countries: the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

This unique frog is mostly found in the Massif de la Selle mountain range. It likes to live in forests that have both pine trees and broadleaf trees. Sadly, the La Selle dusky frog is in danger because its home is disappearing.

About the La Selle Dusky Frog

The La Selle dusky frog was first described in 1937 by a scientist named Doris Mable Cochran. It is also sometimes called Mable's robber frog. These frogs are known for being "endemic" to Hispaniola. This means they are found nowhere else in the world!

Where They Live

These frogs prefer "mesic" forests. This means the forests are moist and have a good balance of water. They live among the trees and plants in these areas. While they can be found in suitable parts of their habitat, their numbers are going down.

Why They Are in Danger

The biggest threat to the La Selle dusky frog is habitat loss. This means the places where they live are being destroyed. People are cutting down trees for wood, which is called logging. They are also clearing land to grow crops, which is called agriculture.

Even in protected areas, the frogs' homes are still at risk. The La Selle dusky frog lives in two important national parks:

However, even in these parks, the quality of their habitat is getting worse. This makes it harder for the frogs to survive and thrive. Protecting these forests is very important to help the La Selle dusky frog.
