La Ward is found at 28°50′42″N 96°27′56″W / 28.84500°N 96.46556°W. It sits where two roads meet: State Highway 172 and FM 616. This spot is in the southern part of Jackson County.
Nearby Cities and Size
The city is about 14 miles (23 km) south of Ganado. It is also 17 miles (27 km) southeast of Edna, which is the main city of the county. The larger city of Victoria is about 40 miles (64 km) to the west. The U.S. Census Bureau says La Ward covers a total area of 0.81 square miles (2.1 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
The Story of La Ward
The community of La Ward began in 1904. This was when the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway arrived in the area. The town was named after Lafayette Ward. He was a local person who helped bring new types of cattle, like Hereford, Brahman, and Jersey cattle, to Texas.
Growth and Changes Over Time
By 1914, La Ward had become an important center for cattle and shipping goods. The community even had its own school district. In 1940, about 200 people lived there. This number grew to around 300 by the early 1960s. However, the population then started to get smaller. It went down to 247 people in 1970, and then to 218 in 1980. By 1990, only 162 people lived in La Ward. But the population grew again to 200 people by the year 2000.
