To save him, Minnie makes a deal with Sheriff Rance. She proposes a game of poker. If she wins, Johnson goes free. If Rance wins, he can take Johnson. Minnie cheats to win the game, saving Johnson's life.

Act 3: The Great Plains

In the final act, Johnson (Ramerrez) has been captured by the sheriff's men. They are about to hang him for his crimes. Just as they are about to carry out the punishment, Minnie rides in on her horse. She pleads with the miners to let Johnson go. Minnie reminds them of all the good things she has done for them. She asks them to show mercy and forgiveness. The miners, who love Minnie deeply, are moved by her words. They decide to let Johnson go free. Minnie and Johnson leave together to start a new life, leaving the gold rush behind.
