Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor was born on 8 November 2003. She is the only daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. Lady Louise is the youngest niece of King Charles III.
She was born when her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was the monarch. At birth, she was 8th in line to the British throne. Today, she is 17th in line, after her younger brother, James, Earl of Wessex.

Her Birth and Baptism
Louise was born early on 8 November 2003, at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey. Her mother, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was taken to the hospital quickly. Louise's father, Prince Edward, was not there because he was on a trip.
Louise was born by an emergency C-section. This was due to a serious problem during birth that caused a lot of blood loss for both mother and baby. Louise was moved to another hospital in London as a safety step. Her mother stayed at Frimley Park until she was well enough to go home. Louise's full name, Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary, was shared on 27 November.
Lady Louise was baptised on 24 April 2004, at Windsor Castle. Her godparents include Lady Sarah Chatto and Lord Ivar Mountbatten. Louise was the last royal baby to wear the original royal christening gown.
When she was born, Louise had a condition called esotropia, which affected her eyes. She had an operation in 2006 that did not fully fix it. She had more treatment in late 2013, which corrected her eyes.
Her Education Journey
Louise first went to St George's School, Windsor Castle. In 2017, she moved to St Mary's School Ascot for her high school years. She chose English, history, politics, and drama for her advanced studies. While at school, she took part in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award program.
In September 2022, Lady Louise began studying English at the University of St Andrews. Before starting university, in August 2022, she worked at a garden centre during the summer.
Military Training
In 2024, Lady Louise joined the British Army's University Officers' Training Corps (UOTC) unit. This unit, called Tayforth UOTC, is part of the Army Reserve. It is made up of students from the University of St Andrews and other nearby schools. As of 2025, she holds the rank of Officer Cadet in the Army Reserve.
Public Appearances
In 2011, when she was seven, Louise was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
In August 2018, Louise went with her mother to Haslar Marina. They met young girls learning to sail. Later that month, they watched the Hockey Women's World Cup final in London. In November 2018, to celebrate her 15th birthday, Louise and her mother appeared on the TV show Strictly Come Dancing. They watched the show from the audience. In December 2018, Louise joined her mother at the International Horse Show in London.
In September 2020, Louise and her family helped clean Southsea Beach. This was to support the Marine Conservation Society.
After her grandfather, Prince Philip, passed away in April 2021, Louise went to a church service with her parents. She also attended his funeral. In March 2022, Louise attended a memorial service for Prince Philip.
In June 2022, she attended Trooping the Colour and joined her family on the balcony. She also attended the Platinum Jubilee National Service of Thanksgiving and the Platinum Party at the Palace. After her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in September 2022, Louise stood vigil by the Queen's coffin. She did this with her brother James and six cousins. On 19 September, she attended the Queen's state funeral.
On 6 May 2023, Louise attended the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The next day, she went to the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.
Her Personal Interests
Louise is a member of Girlguiding. Her grandmother was a patron of the group, and her mother is its president. Her mother was also a Brownie and a Guide when she was a child.
Louise learned to ride horses when she was young. In 2016, she rode with her father during the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations. She also enjoys carriage driving. This sport was made popular in Britain by her grandfather, Prince Philip. In May 2017, she led the carriages at a British Driving Society event. In May 2019, Louise took part in a carriage driving competition and placed third. In April 2021, she inherited her grandfather's driving ponies and carriage. In 2022, she drove one of his carriages in front of the Queen at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Titles and Honours
Louise is known as "Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor." When she was born, she could have been a princess. However, her parents decided that their children would be styled as the children of an earl. In 2020, her mother said that Louise still has her royal title and can choose to use it when she turns 18.
In June 2008, a lake in Canada was named Lake Louise. This was to honour a visit by Louise's father to the province of Manitoba. Her brother also has a lake named after him in the same province.
