She felt jealous that Cinderella's father loved his first wife more.
Lady Tremaine's Story
Cinderella (1950 Film)
In the 1950 animated movie, Lady Tremaine is introduced early on. Cinderella's father, who was a widower, married Lady Tremaine. She was also a widow with two daughters. For a while, they lived happily as a family.
However, after Cinderella's father sadly passed away, Lady Tremaine showed her true, cruel nature. She let their beautiful home fall apart. She pampered her own selfish daughters, Anastasia and Drizella. Cinderella was forced to become a maid in her own house.
Lady Tremaine told Cinderella she could go to the Royal Ball. But only if she finished all her chores and found a suitable dress. When Cinderella did this, her stepsisters, encouraged by Lady Tremaine, ripped her dress apart. This left Cinderella unable to go to the ball.
Later, Cinderella, with the help of her Fairy Godmother, went to the ball anyway. Her stepfamily did not recognize her. But Lady Tremaine felt something familiar about the mysterious girl dancing with Prince Charming.
News spread that the Prince would marry the girl whose foot fit the glass slipper. Cinderella had accidentally left it behind at the ball. Lady Tremaine heard Cinderella humming a song from the ball. She then realized Cinderella was the mysterious girl.
To stop Cinderella, Lady Tremaine locked her in her attic room. She took the key. But Cinderella's mouse friends, Gus and Jaq, bravely stole the key back. Cinderella rushed downstairs just as the Grand Duke was leaving.
Lady Tremaine tried to tell the Duke that Cinderella was just a lowly servant. She said Cinderella had not even been at the ball. But the Duke had to try the slipper on every maiden. He also found Cinderella looked very familiar.
As the Duke was about to try the slipper on Cinderella, Lady Tremaine tripped the footman. The glass slipper shattered. Lady Tremaine smiled, thinking she had won. But Cinderella then revealed she had the other slipper. It fit perfectly, proving she was the Prince's true love. The movie ends with Cinderella marrying the Prince. Lady Tremaine and her daughters are no longer in the picture.
Cinderella II: Dreams Come True
In this sequel, Lady Tremaine appears in a story called An Uncommon Romance. For the first time, Anastasia, one of Lady Tremaine's daughters, goes against her mother. Anastasia falls in love with a kind baker. Lady Tremaine and Drizella try to stop this romance. But Cinderella helps Anastasia follow her heart.
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time
Lady Tremaine is back in this film, still trying to ruin Cinderella's life. Anastasia finds the Fairy Godmother's magic wand. Lady Tremaine uses it to turn back time. She changes things so the glass slipper fits Anastasia instead of Cinderella. She also uses magic to make the Prince forget Cinderella and plan to marry Anastasia.
Cinderella tries to fix everything. Lady Tremaine uses the wand to stop her. But Anastasia feels guilty about marrying someone she doesn't love. At the wedding, she refuses to marry the Prince. Lady Tremaine gets very angry. She tries to turn Cinderella and Anastasia into toads. But the Prince blocks the spell with his sword. The spell bounces back, turning Lady Tremaine and Drizella into toads instead.
Anastasia gives the wand to Cinderella to fix everything. In the end, Lady Tremaine and Drizella are turned back to normal. But they are seen wearing servant clothes, implying they now work in the palace as punishment.
Cinderella (2015 Live-Action Film)
In the 2015 live-action movie, Lady Tremaine is played by Cate Blanchett. She is a graceful woman who married Ella's father after her first husband died. At first, she didn't seem to dislike Ella. But she became jealous when she heard Ella's father say he loved his first wife more.
After Ella's father died, Lady Tremaine felt hurt and jealous. His last words were only about Ella and her mother. Lady Tremaine then showed her cruel side. She fired all the servants and made Ella do all the work. She even joined her daughters in teasing Ella and called her "Cinderella."
When Ella appeared for the ball in her mother's old gown, Lady Tremaine and her daughters tore it apart. At the ball, Lady Tremaine didn't recognize Ella. But she realized it was Ella after the ball, based on her attitude.
The next morning, Lady Tremaine found a glass slipper hidden in the attic. She knew it would fit Ella. She demanded that Ella make her the head of the royal house. She also wanted her daughters to marry rich men. Ella refused.
An angry Lady Tremaine locked Ella in the attic and broke the slipper. She then tried to make a deal with the Grand Duke. She wanted to become a countess and get rich husbands for her daughters. In return, she would keep the secret about Ella.
But the Captain found Ella in the attic. Lady Tremaine tried to stop Ella from trying on the slipper. Ella told her that she was not, and never would be, her mother.
