Descendants 2 is an American musical fantasy movie made for television. It first aired as a Disney Channel Original Movie on July 21, 2017. Many Disney-owned TV channels showed it at the same time. These included ABC, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime, and Lifetime Movies. This film is the second part of the popular Descendants series. It is the follow-up to the first Descendants movie from 2015. The movie stars Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, Mitchell Hope, and China Anne McClain. A third movie, Descendants 3, came out on August 2, 2019.

What Happens in Descendants 2?
Mal is finding it hard to be famous. She is now King Ben's girlfriend. She uses a spell to make her hair blonde. She also tries to act like a perfect princess. Mal tells her friends Evie, Carlos, and Jay about her problems. But her friends are happy with their new lives in Auradon. Evie warns Mal not to rely on her mother's spell book.
Carlos wants to ask Jane to the upcoming Cotillion dance. He asks Mal for help. Mal gives him a candy that will make him tell the truth. But Carlos's dog, Dude, eats it instead. Dude then starts talking in English and tells everyone the blunt truth!
Ben finds out Mal is using magic. Mal admits she feels insecure. This causes a big argument between them. Mal decides to go back to the Isle of the Lost. Her old rival, Uma, now rules there. Uma is the daughter of Ursula. She is joined by Harry and Gil, who are the sons of Captain Hook and Gaston. Mal visits Dizzy Tremaine, a hairstylist. Dizzy is Drizella's daughter. She helps Mal get her signature purple hair back. Harry finds out Mal is back and tells Uma.
Ben, Evie, Jay, and Carlos learn Mal has left. They sneak onto the Isle to find her. But Gil recognizes them. Ben talks to Mal, but she pushes him away. She says it's for his own good and for Auradon. Ben leaves feeling sad. Then Uma captures him.
Mal and Uma have an arm-wrestling match. The prize is Ben and the Fairy Godmother's wand. Uma wins the match. Uma tells Mal and her friends to get the Fairy Godmother's wand. If they do, she will return Ben safely. Carlos and Jay go back to Auradon Prep. They use a 3D printer to make a fake wand. Lonnie, Mulan's daughter, catches them. She makes them let her come along. Lonnie had been unfairly kept off Jay's sports team because she was a girl.
Uma tells Ben how unfair it is that she and others were not chosen to go to Auradon. Ben listens to her. He invites her to Auradon. But Uma plans to get there her own way. Mal's group returns. They give Uma the fake wand for Ben. But Uma quickly realizes it's a fake! The group escapes back to Auradon. Mal and Ben's relationship is still difficult.
The villain kids realize they can't hide from their pasts. They agree to be honest with themselves and each other. Carlos tries to confess his feelings to Jane, which is hard for him. Jay makes Lonnie the captain of his team.
At the Cotillion dance on a ship, Ben surprises everyone. He arrives with Uma. He announces that Uma is his true love. He also says he will destroy the barrier around the Isle. Jane then shows a beautiful stained glass display. Ben had it made to show his love for Mal. Mal realizes Ben loved her for who she truly was. She suspects Uma gave Ben a love potion. Mal tells Ben she loves him and kisses him. This breaks the spell.
Uma gets very angry. She jumps into the water. She uses Ursula's magic seashell necklace to turn into a giant octopus-like creature. Mal fights back by turning into a dragon. Ben steps in and stops the fight. Uma returns the ring Ben had given her. She then leaves. Mal and Ben get back together. Mal gives her spell book to the Fairy Godmother. Evie asks if Dizzy can come to Auradon Prep. When Dizzy is offered, she happily accepts!
In a short scene after the credits, Uma talks to the audience. She promises that the story is not over yet.

Making the Movie
Disney announced a Descendants sequel at the 2015 D23 Expo. The official announcement was made on Disney Channel's Facebook page in October 2015. The writers and producers from the first movie returned for the sequel. Most of the original cast was also expected to come back.
China Anne McClain said that the scene after the credits, where Uma says "You didn’t think this was the end of the story?", was not in the first script. They decided to add it later. This was to hint at another movie, just like the first Descendants movie did.
Who Was Cast?
On June 10, 2016, China Anne McClain was announced to play Uma. Uma is Ursula's daughter. China Anne McClain already voiced Freddie in the Descendants spin-off series. In July 2016, Thomas Doherty was cast as Harry. Harry is the son of Captain Hook. In August 2016, it was confirmed that Brenna D'Amico, Dianne Doan, Jedidiah Goodacre, and Zachary Gibson would return. On July 19, 2017, it was announced that Whoopi Goldberg would be the voice of Ursula.
Where Was it Filmed?
Filming started on September 8, 2016. Like the first Descendants movie, it was mostly filmed in Vancouver and Victoria, Canada.
Music from the Movie
The soundtrack for Descendants 2 was released on July 21, 2017. The first song from the movie, "Ways to Be Wicked," was announced on April 12, 2017.
What Happens Next?
On February 16, 2018, Disney Channel announced that a third movie, Descendants 3, would come out in mid-2019. It premiered on August 2, 2019.
The Prequel Book
A book called Rise of the Isle of the Lost came out on May 23, 2017. This book tells about Uma's rise to power. It also shares her earlier history with Mal. The main story is about Uma planning to get King Triton's trident. She wants to use it to break the barrier around the Isle of the Lost.
The book also mentions a school on the Isle called Serpent Preparatory School. Uma, Harry Hook, and Gil went to this school. It was a rival to Dragon Hall.
