The Lady Washington Hose Company building is located on Academy Street in downtown Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. This special building was once home to a group of volunteer firefighters. Later, it became a place for the Children's Media Project. Today, two artists from Poughkeepsie own it. The building is quite unique because it mixes different architectural styles.

The Lady Washington Hose Company Building

A Unique Look

The building was designed by a local architect named Percival M. Lloyd. Another local company, O'Donnell Construction Company, built it. The outside of the building is made of yellow bricks.

The roof has a cool Japanese-style design with special tiles. You'll also see a small part of the building that looks a bit like a castle, with a castellated roofline. This style is called Gothic Revival. On the second floor, there's a large window that sticks out, called a hanging bay window. The parts under the roof, the bay window, and the garage door at street level are painted a bright green. This green color stands out against the yellow bricks.

Inside, the building still looks much like it did when it was first built. You can even see the wooden supports, called rafters, that hold up the roof. This shows the Japanese influence from the outside continues inside.

Its Story Through Time

The Lady Washington Hose Company was started in 1863. At that time, the city bought new fire engines for other fire companies. This led to some changes, and the Neptune Company was reorganized and became the Lady Washington Hose Company. Their firehouse was built in 1908.

After the city's main fire department took over, the building was used for other things. For a while, it was a warehouse. In 1982, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site. It's one of three old firehouses in Poughkeepsie that are on this list. The other two are the O. H. Booth Hose Company and the Niagara Engine House.
