Lagg is a small village or settlement, also known as a hamlet. It is located on Lagg Bay, which is on the eastern coast of the island of Jura. This area is part of Argyll and Bute in Scotland.
Lagg is found along the A846 road. It is about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from Craighouse, another place on Jura. The hamlet has two main parts. One is Lagg township, which sits above a steep slope leading from the bay. The other part is a building that used to be an inn. A single house called Dunchraobhan is also nearby, at a similar height to Lagg.
A Look Back at Lagg
The name "Lagg" has a special meaning. It comes from a word that means "The hollow." This name describes the area where the hamlet is located.
Long ago, Lagg was an important place for travel. In the 1800s, it was the main ferry crossing point from Jura to Knapdale on the mainland. This ferry helped people move between the island and the rest of Scotland.
Later, there was an idea to bring a car ferry to Lagg. This would have made it easier for cars to travel to and from the island. However, the people living in Lagg voted against this plan. They were worried that a car ferry would bring too much traffic. They feared it would disturb their peaceful way of life, especially with more people traveling to Islay through Lagg.
Lagg used to be much bigger than it is today. At one time, about 70 people lived there. Now, only four houses remain in the entire valley. In the past, Lagg also had important community buildings. There was a school for children, a post office for mail, and an inn called Lagg Inn. The old inn building is now known as Lagg Farm.
