History of Lajas Arriba
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given to the United States by Spain. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This treaty officially ended the war between the two countries.
Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States government wanted to know how many people lived in Puerto Rico. They did a special count called a census. This census showed that 1,152 people lived in the Lajas Arriba barrio at that time.
