Lajos Baróti started his football journey as a player. From 1928 to 1946, he played for a team called Szegedi AK. After that, he joined Győri ETO and played there from 1946 to 1948.

He also had the honor of playing for his country. Between 1939 and 1941, he played two matches for the Hungarian national team. He was a defender, helping to protect his team's goal.

Coaching the National Team

Baróti became the head coach of the Hungarian national team in 1957. He led the team for many years, first from 1957 to 1966. Later, he returned to coach them again from 1975 to 1978. In total, he coached Hungary in 117 matches.

He guided Hungary to several big international tournaments:

  • The World Cups in 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1978.
  • The Olympics in Rome in 1960.
  • The 1964 European Nations' Cup, where his team finished in third place.

His biggest success with the national team was winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. This was a huge achievement for Hungarian football.

Between 1971 and 1972, Baróti also coached the Peruvian national team. In 1971, he led their Olympic team during a special tournament before the Olympics.

Újpesti Dózsa's Golden Era
