Settlements Lake Cushman

Lake Cushman is a large, beautiful lake in Mason County, Washington. It covers about 4,010 acres and is also a reservoir. This means its water level is controlled by a dam. The lake is located on the north fork of the Skokomish River. It's a popular spot for outdoor fun like hiking, fishing, and boating.

How Lake Cushman Was Formed

Lake Cushman was first created by nature a long, long time ago. During the last ice age, a huge sheet of ice called a glacier moved through the area. As the glacier slowly moved, it carved out a long, narrow valley. When the ice melted, it left behind a natural dam made of rocks and dirt. This dam held back the water, forming the original lake.

The Cushman Dam

Later, the lake was made even bigger by people. A dam called Cushman Dam No. 1 was built across the Skokomish River. This dam helps to control the lake's water. It also creates electricity for the Tacoma Power system.

Fun Things to Do at Lake Cushman

Lake Cushman is a favorite place for many outdoor activities. Its clear blue water and beautiful surroundings make it special.

  • Hiking: There are many trails around the lake. You can explore the thick forests of hemlock, fir, and cedar trees.
  • Fishing: The lake is a great spot to catch fish.
  • Boating and Kayaking: You can enjoy the calm waters by boat or kayak.
  • Relaxing: The shoreline has resorts and cabins where families can stay.

The lake is known for its huge, round rocks along the edges. These rocks add to the unique beauty of the area.

How Lake Cushman Got Its Name

Lake Cushman was named after a man named Orrington Cushman. He was an important person in the 1800s. In 1854, he helped Governor Isaac Stevens talk with the Native American tribes of Puget Sound. This meeting was for the Treaty of Point Elliott negotiations. The treaty was an agreement between the United States government and the tribes.
