Lake Elmo is a city in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is known for its mix of city life and open farmland. In 2020, about 11,335 people lived there. By 2022, the population grew to an estimated 13,449.
Even though it's a city, much of Lake Elmo still looks like the countryside. This is because a lot of the land is used for farming. The city is growing quickly. Experts think its population could be over 21,000 by the year 2040. This growth is happening after the city was asked to create a plan for its future development.

History of Lake Elmo
The city of Lake Elmo gets its name from a nearby body of water, Lake Elmo. The area started with a single farm in 1852. This farm was located near what is now Manning Avenue and 30th Street. This spot is southeast of downtown Lake Elmo. It is also across the highway from the Lake Elmo Airport.
The barn on this first farm was built in 1875. It was later fixed up and turned into a house in 1998. Sadly, the original 1852 farmhouse was burned down on purpose in 2007.
Geography and Location
Lake Elmo is located in the state of Minnesota. It covers a total area of about 24.36 square miles (62.64 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 22.25 square miles (57.22 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 2.11 square miles (5.42 square kilometers), is water.
Two major highways pass near Lake Elmo. Minnesota State Highway 36 runs along the northern edge of the city. Interstate 94 runs along the southern edge. Inside the city, County State-Aid Highway 14 is an important east-west road. County State-Aid Highway 17 is a main north-south road.

Population in 2010
In 2010, Lake Elmo had 8,069 people living in 2,779 households. Out of these, 2,252 were families. The city had about 363 people per square mile (140 people per square kilometer). There were 2,877 homes in total.
Most of the people in Lake Elmo were White (92.3%). Other groups included Asian (3.3%), African American (0.8%), and Native American (0.3%). About 3.5% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Many households (38%) had children under 18 living with them. Most households (70.7%) were married couples. About 19% of households were not families. The average household had 2.88 people, and the average family had 3.21 people.
The average age of people in Lake Elmo was 42.4 years old. About 27.1% of residents were under 18. About 11% were 65 years old or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (50.2%) and females (49.8%).
Schools and Learning
Most of Lake Elmo is part of the Stillwater School District. This district is known as District #834. Lake Elmo has its own schools for younger students. These include Lake Elmo Elementary School and Oak-Land Middle School.
For older students and adults, Rasmussen College has a campus in Lake Elmo. This campus also serves the nearby area of Woodbury. Rasmussen College helps students prepare for specific careers. It offers programs that lead to bachelor's and associate's degrees. The college focuses on subjects like health sciences, nursing, and business. It also teaches about criminal justice, technology, design, and early education.
Environmental Cleanup Efforts
There is an area in Lake Elmo where past activities caused some environmental concerns. This area is called the Baytown Township Groundwater Plume site. It is located at 11325 Stillwater Boulevard. From 1940 to 1968, a metal-working business operated there.
Over time, a chemical called TCE was found in the groundwater. This groundwater is a source of local drinking water. Because of this, the site became a "Superfund" site. A Superfund site is a place where the government helps clean up pollution from the past. This ensures that the groundwater is safe for everyone.
