A Look at Lake Grove's Past

Early Settlement and First Buildings

People first settled in the Lake Grove area in the early 1700s. They built homes along Middle Country Road, which was once an old path used by Native Americans. The first church, the First Congregational Church of New Village, was built in 1818. This historic building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. You can even see it pictured on the village's official seal!

In 1870, Lake Grove got its first post office. Mail was delivered by horse and wagon from a nearby train station. Over the years, the area had many different names like Lakeland and Lakeville. It finally became known as Lake Grove in the mid-1800s. This name was chosen because of the many groves of trees near Lake Ronkonkoma.

Growth and New Developments

In the early 1900s, Lake Ronkonkoma became a popular spot for fun and relaxation. This led to many small summer houses being built in Lake Grove. In 1921, a new post office opened in the eastern part of the area, which was named Centereach.

More homes were built, and Lake Grove's population grew quickly. In 1954, a new road called Nesconset Highway was built. This road created a major business area in Lake Grove. The Smith Haven Mall was built there in 1968. This brought more businesses and traffic, which made local residents concerned about their community.

Becoming an Incorporated Village

To gain more control over local planning and development, the residents decided to make Lake Grove an official village. This process is called "incorporation." On September 9, 1968, the community voted to become the Incorporated Village of Lake Grove.
