Discovering Lake Hood
What is Lake Hood?
Lake Hood is not a natural lake. It was built by people to create a great place for recreation. It officially opened in 2001. A very important person, Jenny Shipley, who was the Prime Minister of New Zealand at the time, opened it.
The lake is quite large! It stretches about 2.3 kilometers long. It is also about 1 kilometer wide. The total area of the lake is more than 80 hectares. That's a lot of space for water activities!
Fun Activities at the Lake
Lake Hood is famous for its many water sports. It has a special eight-lane course for rowing. This means many boats can race at the same time. There are also separate areas for waterskiing and jet skiing.
Many people love to visit Lake Hood for rowing. It is becoming more popular than other places like Lake Ruataniwha. This is because Lake Hood is not as windy. Less wind makes it easier and fairer for rowing competitions.
Homes Around the Lake
A large neighborhood has been built all around Lake Hood. This area is like a smaller town next to Ashburton. Many homes are now close to the lake, letting people enjoy the water easily.
