History of the Name
The name Nebagamon comes from the Chippewa Indian language. It was once thought to mean "place to hunt deer by fire on the water."
However, old notes and maps from a French explorer named Joseph Nicollet tell a different story. In 1837, Nicollet wrote that what is now Nebagamon Creek was called "Sleeping Bear River." The word "Nibegomowin" might actually mean "night-time game waiting." This could refer to a place where animals like bears would rest or be tracked at night. You can see "Sleeping Bear River" on Nicollet's map from 1843.
