Lake Norman of Catawba is a special kind of community in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but doesn't have its own local government. The population here was 11,395 people in 2020. This was a big jump from 7,411 people in 2010! Lake Norman of Catawba is part of a larger area called the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Lake Norman of Catawba is found in the southeastern part of Catawba County. It's made up of many neighborhoods that sit along the western side of Lake Norman. This lake is a very large reservoir on the Catawba River. The area also includes the shores of many smaller water areas that branch off the main lake.

Borders and Nearby Communities

The eastern edge of the CDP is the middle of the Catawba River. This river also forms the border between Catawba County and Iredell County. To the south, it meets the Lincoln County line. On the west and north, the area is bordered by several country roads. It stretches as far north as Long Island Road. Inside this CDP, you'll find smaller communities. These include Terrell, Sherrills Ford, Monbo, and Long Island.

Roads and Travel

North Carolina Highway 150 runs through the southern part of Lake Norman of Catawba. It goes right through the middle of Terrell. From there, you can drive about 11 miles east to Mooresville. Or, you can head west about 17 miles to Lincolnton.

The Marshall Steam Station

The Marshall Steam Station is a power plant that uses coal to make electricity. It's run by Duke Energy and is located in this area. It's just northeast of downtown Terrell. In 2014, Duke Energy had to fix a leaking pipe at the plant. They received permission to manage the coal ash from the station. Later, in 2015, Duke reported that a sinkhole had appeared near the plant's dam. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) said Duke fixed the hole by adding a special liner and filling it with crushed stone.

The United States Census Bureau measures the size of places like Lake Norman of Catawba. They found that the total area is about 83.8 square kilometers (or 32.4 square miles). A large part of this area is land, about 61.7 square kilometers (23.8 square miles). The rest, about 22.1 square kilometers (8.5 square miles), is water.
