Lake Plains is a small place in South Australia. It's about 64 kilometers (40 miles) south of the Adelaide city centre. It's also about 27 kilometers (17 miles) northeast of Goolwa. You can find it on the western side of Lake Alexandrina.
History and Name
Lake Plains got its name because it's a flat area near a lake. Its official boundaries were set in August 2000. A school used to be open here from 1862 to 1942.
Land Use and Environment
Most of the land in Lake Plains is used for farming. The Bremer River flows through the area. It then empties into Lake Alexandrina. Because of this, land planning needs to consider possible floods.
Protecting the Coastline
The area along the lake is protected for nature. This is because it's part of a very important wetland. This wetland is called the Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert Wetland. It is recognized internationally as a special place for nature. It is also listed as a wetland of national importance.
Government and Location
Lake Plains is part of different government areas. It is in the federal area called Mayo. It is also in the state area called Hammond. Locally, it is managed by the Alexandrina Council.
