Lake Preston is mentioned in the famous historical novel The Long Winter. This book was written by American author Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The story tells about a very harsh winter in 1880–1881. In the book, a neighbor of Laura's family, David Gilbert, bravely traveled from De Smet, South Dakota to Lake Preston. At that time, Lake Preston was just called "Preston." He made this risky trip to deliver and pick up mail. Even though the distance was only about 12 miles, it was extremely dangerous. Blizzards could start very quickly, and anyone caught outside during a blizzard had almost no chance of surviving.
