Geography of Lakeview, Texas
Lakeview is in the middle of Hall County. It sits along State Highway 256. The town is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Memphis. Memphis is the main town of Hall County. Lakeview is also about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Clarendon by road.
The United States Census Bureau says Lakeview covers a small area. It is about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers) in total. All of this area is land.
History of Lakeview Town
Lakeview has a very interesting start. It has been in two different places in Hall County. The first Lakeview began in May 1890. It was located near the center of the county. A post office and several shops opened there.
This first site tried to become the main town of the county. But it did not succeed. Most of the homes were then sold to farmers. The land went back to the family of S.L. Lindley. The post office later moved to David H. Davenport's farm in 1902. He ran a general store there.
Moving to a New Location
Three years later, in 1905, Davenport bought new land. This land was north of his farm. It had a good supply of soft water. This made it a great spot to build a community. On June 11, 1908, he moved his store and post office. He planned out the second Lakeview site. This is where the town is today.
In 1910, there was hope for a new railroad. The Altus, Roswell, and El Paso Company started building a railroad bed through Lakeview. But they had to stop the project.
Challenges and Growth
Even with no railroad, the community kept going. Two big fires happened in 1918 and 1919. These fires caused a lot of damage. But Lakeview survived. The town officially became a city in 1921. By the late 1920s, Lakeview had many stores. Its population grew to over 1,000 people.
Decline and Modern Times
Another fire in 1930 destroyed the business area. The Great Depression also made things harder for Lakeview. There was a short period of growth in the late 1940s. But it was not enough to bring the town back to its earlier size.
The First State Bank of Lakeview had been open since 1908. It joined with the First National Bank of Memphis in 1953. By 1980, the number of people living in Lakeview had dropped to 244. This number continued to fall. It was 202 in 1990 and 152 in 2000.
