The Lamar Building: A Tall Story in Augusta
Building a Landmark
The Lamar Building was planned to be finished in 1916. However, a huge event called the Augusta Fire of 1916 happened. This fire was so big that it damaged the building under construction. Crews had to tear down parts of it and start over! The building was finally completed in 1918.
A Unique Design Addition
Many years later, in 1976, a special top floor, known as a penthouse, was added. This new section was designed by a very famous architect named I. M. Pei. He is known for designing many important buildings around the world.
One architecture critic, James Howard Kunstler, once said the new top part of the Lamar Building looked a bit like a Darth Vader helmet! Interestingly, this addition was designed before Pei created the famous glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Tallest in the City
The Lamar Building has been the tallest building in Augusta ever since it was built. Right next to it stands the SunTrust Bank Building. People sometimes call it the Lamar Building's "sister building" because they are so close.
A Historic Place
In 1979, the Lamar Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site in the United States. Maps from fire insurance companies show that the building is about 165 feet (50 meters) tall to the top of its 16th floor roof, just below the penthouse.
