The Lamborghini LM001 was a special off-road vehicle built by the famous Italian car company Lamborghini in 1981. It was shown for the first time at the Geneva Auto Show that year. At the same event, Lamborghini also showed off its new sports car, the Lamborghini Jalpa.
The LM001 was designed to be a tough vehicle for military use. However, only one prototype was ever made. This was because the car had a big problem: its engine was placed at the back. This design made the LM001 very hard to control and drive well.
The LM001's Story
Even though Lamborghini's earlier off-road vehicle, the Lamborghini Cheetah, was not successful, the company still wanted to create a strong military vehicle. They decided to redesign the Cheetah concept into the LM001.
Engine Choices
The LM001 prototype used a different engine than the Cheetah. The Cheetah had a Chrysler engine. But the LM001 prototype was powered by a 5.9-litre AMC V8 engine. This engine could produce 134 kilowatts of power. Lamborghini had plans to use a powerful V12 engine, like the one from the Lamborghini Countach, in any production models. However, because of the handling issues, the LM001 never went into full production.
