Albert Bierstadt's Expedition
In 1859, a talented artist named Albert Bierstadt joined an expedition heading west. He traveled with Frederick W. Lander, who was leading the trip. Bierstadt was known for painting large, detailed landscapes. He wanted to see and paint the amazing scenery of the American West.
The Famous Painting
After his journey, Albert Bierstadt created a huge painting. It showed a stunning mountain landscape. This painting was very big, about 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide. He named it The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak.
The painting was finished in 1863. It became very popular. In 1865, it was sold for a large sum of money, $25,000. This was a huge amount back then!
Naming the Peak
Frederick W. Lander, the explorer who Bierstadt traveled with, sadly passed away in 1862 during the American Civil War. To honor his friend, Bierstadt decided to name the mountain in his painting "Lander's Peak." This is how the mountain got its name.
