History of the Lands Board Office

The Armidale Lands Office was built in 1887. It was designed by the office of the New South Wales Government Architect, James Barnet.

Setting up the Lands Office for the New England area was a big discussion. This happened after a new law, the Lands Act of 1884, was passed.

At first, the Lands Minister, James Farnell, suggested putting the new Lands Office in Glen Innes. It opened there in January 1885.

However, many of the land cases were from the Armidale and Walcha areas. These places were quite far from Glen Innes. People sent requests and held public meetings to ask for the office to be moved.

After looking into the matter again in 1886, it was decided. The Lands Office would open in Armidale on February 1, 1887.

What the Building Looks Like

This building is a very impressive two-story public building from the Victorian era. It is made of red bricks laid in a special pattern called English bond.

The building has a fancy and elegant verandah on the outside. It has a roof made of corrugated steel. Above the verandah is a balcony.

The railings and support posts on the verandah and balcony are made of cast iron. The roof parts are curved timber. Six tall chimneys stand out on the roof. The roof is made of corrugated iron, but it was originally slate. There are also vents on the roof ridge.

Changes Over Time

The building was updated and fixed up in 1974 and 1975. In 1975, the original slate roof was taken off and replaced with the corrugated steel roof you see today.

Why This Building is Special

The Lands Board Office is a beautifully made and designed public building from the Victorian period. It is very important because of its design and how well it was built.

It is surrounded by other old buildings from the same time when Armidale was growing. These include the Armidale Folk Museum, the Imperial Hotel, and the Post Office. Together, these buildings form part of the Armidale Conservation Area. This means they are protected because they show the history and style of the town.

The Lands Board Office was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This listing helps make sure the building is preserved for many years to come.
