Lane started as a farming community in 1856. It is located between two rivers, the Santee and the Black River.
A main train line, run by CSX Transportation, goes right through the town. Lane is in a rural area. It is not far from where two major highways, US 52 and US 521, meet.
The town has a modern water system. In 1990, the water from Lane's ground sources was named the best drinking water by the SC Rural Water Association.
