Many people know the name "Langley" because it is where the main office of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is located. History of Langley: How Did It Get Its Name?
The land that is now Langley used to belong to Thomas Lee. He was a very important person in the Colony of Virginia a long time ago. He was the governor from 1749 to 1750.
Lee named his land "Langley" after a place in England. This place, Langley Hall, was part of his family's home in England. Later, in 1839, a person named Benjamin Mackall bought about 700 acres (2.8 km²) of this land from the Lee family. He decided to keep the name "Langley."
