A Glimpse into Langnau's Past

Langnau am Albis has a long history! It was first mentioned in old writings between the years 1101 and 1150. Back then, it was called Langenow. Later, between 1133 and 1167, its name appeared as Langenouw. These old names help us trace the village's beginnings.

Langnau am Albis covers an area of about 8.7 square kilometers (3.4 square miles). A large part of this land, almost half (48.6%), is covered by forests. About 27.7% of the area is used for farming.

The village also has buildings and roads, which make up 22.5% of its land. The remaining small part (1.2%) includes natural features like rivers. In 1996, homes and buildings took up 17.1% of the total area. Roads and other transport paths made up 5.4%.

Langnau am Albis is located in the Sihltal valley, nestled on the slopes of the Albis mountain range. It's a mix of countryside and suburban areas. The village is only about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center of Zürich. Langnau is one of the larger communities in the Canton of Zürich.

  • The Wildpark Langenberg is a major attraction. It's a zoo located on a wooded hill. Here, you can see animals like wolves, lynx, and ibex roaming freely in a natural setting.
  • For amazing views, visit the Hochwachtturm. This is a 33-meter (108-foot) tall wooden tower. It's open to the public and offers fantastic views of the Cantons Zurich and Zug, and even the Swiss Alps. The tower is on top of the Albis mountain range, about 1.5 kilometers from the Albis pass.
  • Near the town, you can find the ruins of Schnabelburg Castle. This castle was built around 1150 to protect the road from Zurich to Lucerne. It was destroyed in 1309.

Getting Around Langnau: Transportation

The Langnau-Gattikon railway station is an important transport hub. It's a stop on the Zurich S-Bahn line S4. From here, you can reach Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich's main train station) in just 21 minutes. The Zimmerberg bus line, called Zimmerbergbus, also connects the Zimmerberg region and parts of the Sihl Valley. This bus service is provided by the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU).
