Lapeer is a small town in Cortland County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 767 people lived there. It is located on the southern edge of Cortland County. The town is also south of the city of Cortland.

History of Lapeer
Early Settlers and Formation
The area where Lapeer is located was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. This was land set aside for soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
The first known settler from outside the area arrived around 1799. His name was Primus Grant. He was a Black man from Guiana. He is buried on a hill that looks over a stream called "Big Brook." We don't know much about him or his family.
Lapeer became its own town in 1845. Before that, it was part of the town of Virgil.
Historic Buildings
The Stage Coach Inn is an important historic building in Lapeer. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This means it is recognized as a special place worth preserving.

Land and Water
Lapeer covers a total area of about 25.18 square miles (65.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.14 square miles (0.37 square kilometers), is water.
The southern border of Lapeer touches Tioga and Broome counties.
Rivers and Roads
The Tioughnioga River flows through the northeastern part of Lapeer. Major roads also cross this area. These include Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11. New York State Route 221 is another important road that runs east to west in the town.
The eastern side of Lapeer has streams that flow into the Tioughnioga River. The western side has streams that flow into the East Branch of Owego Creek. Both of these waterways are part of the larger Susquehanna River system.
