Early Life and Career
Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He learned about photography when he was very young. His mother was a baby photographer who traveled for her job, and he helped with the family business starting at age 14.
In 1959, Clark started taking pictures of his friends. He later attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to study art.
In 1964, he moved to New York City to work as a freelance photographer. However, he was soon drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1965.
Photography Career
After his time in the army, Clark published his first book, Tulsa, in 1971. It was a collection of black-and-white photos he took of his friends between 1963 and 1971. The book showed a side of American life that many people had not seen before. It made people think about the challenges some young people faced.
His next major work was a photo collection called "The Perfect Childhood." In this project, he explored how movies, TV, and magazines can shape the lives of young people.
Clark's photographs are now part of important collections in several art museums. These include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Filmmaking Career
In 1993, Clark directed a music video for the singer Chris Isaak. This experience sparked his interest in making movies.
His First Movie
Clark met a young writer named Harmony Korine in New York City. He asked Korine to write a script for his first movie, Kids. The film was released in 1995 and caused a lot of debate. It showed teenagers dealing with very serious and adult situations. Because of its intense themes, the movie was given an NC-17 rating, which is for adults only.
Other Work
Clark continued to direct independent films. His 2002 film Ken Park was also very controversial. It was banned in Australia because of its graphic scenes.
In 2015, Clark worked with the popular clothing brand Supreme. They created a line of T-shirts and skateboard decks to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his movie Kids. The items featured famous images from the film.
Clark has won major awards at several film festivals for his movies, including Another Day in Paradise, Bully, and Marfa Girl.
