Lawrence Donald Clark (born January 19, 1943) is an American film director, photographer, writer, and film producer. He is well known for his film Kids (1995) and his photography book Tulsa (1971). His work often looks at young people who are part of special groups. These groups can include those interested in surfing, punk rock, or skateboarding.

Early Life

Larry Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He started learning photography when he was very young. His mother was a photographer who traveled to take pictures of babies. Larry began helping her in the family business when he was 13. His father was a traveling sales manager. He sold books and magazines door-to-door and was often away from home.

Clark later went to the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There, he studied under teachers like Walter Sheffer and Gerhard Bakker.

Career as a Photographer and Director

In 1964, Clark moved to New York City to work as a freelance photographer. However, he was soon drafted into the United States Army. From 1964 to 1965, he served in the Vietnam War. His experiences during this time influenced his work. They led him to publish his famous 1971 book, Tulsa.

Clark also created a photo series called "The Perfect Childhood." This project explored how media affects young people. His photographs are now in many art museums. These include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

In 1993, Clark directed a music video for Chris Isaak. The song was called "Solitary Man." This experience made him interested in directing films. After publishing more photo collections, Clark met Harmony Korine. He asked Korine to write the script for his first movie, Kids. The film was released in 1995. It was widely discussed and received different reviews. Clark continued to direct more independent films after this.

Films

Kids

The film Kids received a special rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. It was later released without a rating. This happened after Disney bought Miramax, the company that released the film.

They released a collection of skateboards, T-shirts, and sweatshirts. These items featured pictures from the movie. The collection was released in May 2015. It was available in Supreme stores in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Japan.

Clark has won several awards for his films. He won top prizes at the Cognac Festival du Film Policier for Another Day in Paradise. He also won at the Stockholm Film Festival for Bully.
