Larry Donnell Drew was born on April 2, 1958. He is an American professional basketball coach. He also used to be a basketball player. Currently, he works as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In 2018, Larry Drew was honored by being named to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

College Basketball Career

Larry Drew played college basketball for the Missouri Tigers. He was a point guard, which is a player who leads the team's offense.

Professional Basketball Career

Playing in the NBA (1980–1991)

The Detroit Pistons picked Larry Drew in the first round of the 1980 NBA draft. He was the 17th player chosen overall. He played for 10 seasons in the NBA. During his career, he played for the Pistons, the Kansas City/Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Larry Drew played in 714 games during his NBA career. He scored a total of 8,110 points. One of his best years was the 1982–83 season when he played for the Kings. In that season, he played in 75 games. He averaged 20.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. On January 21, 1983, he scored his highest points in a single game, with 33 points. This helped his team win against the Houston Rockets.

Playing in Italy (1988–1989)

In the 1988–89 season, Larry Drew also played basketball in Italy. He played for a team called Scavolini in the Italian League.

Coaching Career

Larry Drew has had a long career as a basketball coach. He started as an assistant coach for several NBA teams.

Head Coach Roles

Larry Drew became the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for the 2010–11 season. He coached the Hawks until the end of the 2012–13 season.

After leaving the Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks hired him as their head coach on May 31, 2013. He coached the Bucks for one season. On June 30, 2014, the Bucks decided to hire a new head coach, Jason Kidd.

On August 19, 2014, Larry Drew joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach. In 2016, the Cavaliers won their first NBA Championship. Drew was an assistant coach for that championship team.

Later, in March 2018, he became the interim head coach for the Cavaliers. This happened when the main coach, Tyronn Lue, took time off for health reasons. The team played very well under Drew, winning 8 out of 9 games. In October 2018, he became the acting head coach after Coach Lue was no longer with the team. He was named the permanent head coach on November 5. Larry Drew and the Cavaliers went their separate ways after his contract ended in 2019.

Since November 16, 2020, Larry Drew has been an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers. He works under head coach Tyronn Lue again.

Personal Life

Larry Drew is married to Sharon Drew. They have three children together: Larry II, Landon, and Lindsey. His oldest son, Larry II, also played college basketball. He played for North Carolina and then UCLA. Larry II has also played in the NBA for the New Orleans Pelicans. His middle son, Landon, played for Cal State Northridge. His youngest son, Lindsey, played for Nevada.
