Lawrence Edward Foote Jr. (born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 12, 1980) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently a coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League (NFL). He helps coordinate the passing game and coaches the inside linebackers.

Before becoming a coach, Foote was a star college football player. He was an All-American at the University of Michigan. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played 13 seasons as a linebacker. Foote won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers. These were Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII.

College Football Career

Larry Foote played college football at the University of Michigan. He played in 48 games during his college career. He started 28 of those games. Foote made 212 tackles and 11 sacks. He was known for making many tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

In 2000, as a junior, Foote was named to the All-Big Ten Conference first-team. This was a big honor in college football. He also earned second-team honors from the media. He studied physical education in college.

As a senior in 2001, Foote was even better. He was chosen as a first-team All-American. He was also named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He received the Roger Zatkoff Award for being the team's best linebacker.

On October 27, 2001, Foote set a school record. He made 7 tackles for a loss in a game against Iowa. This record stood for many years. It was finally broken in 2017 by Khaleke Hudson.

Playing in the NFL

Larry Foote was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2002 NFL Draft. He was the 128th player picked overall. He quickly became an important player for the team.

In his first year (2002), Foote played in 14 games. He made 20 tackles. By 2004, he was a key player. He had 69 tackles and three sacks. He also got his first career interception that year.

The 2005 season was a huge year for Foote. He started all 16 games for the Steelers. He made 102 tackles and three sacks. Foote made a very important interception in the 2005 AFC Championship Game. This play helped the Steelers win the game. Two weeks later, Foote and the Steelers won Super Bowl XL.

Foote continued to play well in 2006 and 2007. He had 90 tackles and four sacks in 2006. In 2007, he made 81 tackles. He helped the Steelers win another Super Bowl in 2009. This was Super Bowl XLIII.

The Steelers released Foote in May 2009. He wanted more playing time.

Detroit Lions Season

Foote then signed a one-year deal with his hometown team, the Detroit Lions. He played one season for them in 2009.

Return to the Steelers

On March 15, 2010, Foote signed a new contract to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played for them again until 2014. He signed another contract with them in 2013. The Steelers released him again in March 2014.

On May 6, 2014, Foote signed with the Arizona Cardinals. He played one season for them. He was considered for the Comeback Player of the Year award. After this season, he officially retired from playing football. He then started his coaching career with the Cardinals.

Coaching Career

Larry Foote quickly moved into coaching after his playing career.

Arizona Cardinals Coaching

On February 19, 2015, Foote became an assistant linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. He was promoted to the main linebackers coach in 2016.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coaching

On January 12, 2019, Foote joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching staff. He became their outside linebackers coach. In 2021, Foote won his first Super Bowl as a coach. This was Super Bowl LV. This made it his third Super Bowl title overall.

After the 2021 season, Foote changed roles. He started coaching the inside linebackers. He was also named the pass game coordinator for the Buccaneers. This means he helps plan how the team's offense will pass the ball.

Personal Life

Larry Foote is known for his kindness. In March 2008, he paid for the funeral of a ten-year-old boy from Detroit. The boy had drowned after falling through ice. Foote had no connection to the family. But he was touched by the story. He had a son around the same age. He also played on that same frozen river as a child.

On June 28, 2008, Foote married Jonelle Massop. They have four children together: Jalyn, Tripp, Tramm, and Mason. Foote also has another son named Trey. His mother is Leslie Matthews. He has two sisters, Jennifer and Ciara.

Larry Foote was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame on October 17, 2024. This honor recognized his amazing career in high school, college, and professional football in Michigan.
