Las Flores is a special kind of town called a municipality in Honduras. It is part of the Lempira department, which is like a state or province in Honduras.

Las Flores is about 17 kilometers (11 miles) away from the city of Gracias. You can find it along the main road that goes to Santa Rosa de Copán. The town itself is set back about 200 meters (656 feet) from this paved road.

History of Las Flores

The very first people to settle in Las Flores came from the La Paz department. They first named the area "Las Flores de Santa Bárbara". This name was given to honor a saint's image from that place. Las Flores officially became a municipality on January 1, 1869.

Geography and Climate

This municipality is located in a valley, which is a low area of land between hills or mountains. A river flows nearby. The plants and trees here are typical of a dry sub-tropical forest. Because it's in a valley, the weather in Las Flores is usually hot. There are some hills around the town, but they are not very tall or steep.

Las Flores shares its borders with several other places:

  • To the North: the Lepaera municipality.
  • To the South: the Gracias municipality.
  • To the East: also the Gracias municipality.
  • To the West: the Talgua municipality and the Copán department.

Economy and Resources

The most important way people make money in Las Flores is through trade and business. This is because of its good location near the cities of Gracias and Santa Rosa de Copán. Along the main road, you can find many restaurants, shops, and car repair places.

People in Las Flores also raise cattle and produce milk. These products are mostly used by the local community. Another common activity is collecting gravel, sand, and other building materials from the two rivers nearby. Much of these materials are needed by the city of Gracias. Recently, these materials have also been used to build a new highway between Gracias and La Esperanza.

Many young people from Las Flores finish their basic schooling in the town. After that, most of them move to Santa Rosa de Copán for better education. People in Las Flores feel very safe. It is common to see them gathering in the central park or on the streets late at night.

About 90% of the people living in Las Flores are Mestizo. This means they are a mix of native Indigenous people and Spanish settlers.

Visiting Las Flores

You can explore the downtown area of Las Flores in about an hour. There are several spots where you can go swimming in the rivers. You can also find a few places with internet access.

  • Fair: The local fair takes place from September 6 to September 30.
