Las Plumas was once a small community in Butte County, California. Its name means "The Feathers" in Spanish. This name came from its location near the Feather River. Today, Las Plumas is no longer visible because it was flooded to create Lake Oroville.

Where Was Las Plumas?

Las Plumas was located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) west-northwest of Berry Creek. It sat along the North Fork of the Feather River. The area was about 902 feet (275 meters) above sea level.

What Was the Climate Like?

The weather in Las Plumas was usually warm and dry in the summers. It had what is called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it had mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

The Story of Las Plumas

Las Plumas had a post office that served the community for many years. It opened in 1908 and closed in 1967. There was a short break in service from 1909 to 1912.

The town was nestled in the beautiful Feather River canyon. However, its location also led to its end. When the Oroville Dam was built, the area where Las Plumas stood was going to be flooded. Because of this, everyone living there had to move out. The town was then covered by the waters of Lake Oroville. Most of the people who used to live in Las Plumas moved to nearby Oroville.
