Lauren Layfield's Career Journey
Lauren Layfield studied English and creative writing at the University of Salford. After graduating, she began her exciting career in television and radio.
Starting at CBBC
In September 2015, Lauren joined CBBC, which is a children's television channel. Her first appearance was during a special show called Hacker's Birthday Bash: 30 Years of Children's BBC.
She became a co-host for the BAFTA-winning show The Dengineers. This show helps design amazing dens for kids. She first presented with Mark Wright. Later, in April 2017, Joe Tracini took over as her co-host. Lauren continued to present The Dengineers until 2019.
More TV Shows and Appearances
In January 2016, Lauren started co-hosting another children's TV show called All Over the Place with Ed Petrie. She also appeared on the game show Ultimate Brain once. She was a panelist four times on the fun show The Dog Ate My Homework.
Lauren's television work continued with other shows. She presented for Match of the Day Kickabout, which is a spin-off show about football. She also reported for The One Show and presented on Morning Live.
Competing on Celebrity Mastermind
Lauren Layfield has appeared on the TV quiz show Celebrity Mastermind twice. In 2016, her special subject was the Jurassic Park films. She finished in third place that time. She returned to the show in February 2024. Her special subject was the music group Arctic Monkeys, and she came in second place.
The Viral Hacker T. Dog Clip
In 2022, a funny video clip of Lauren and Hacker T. Dog from CBBC HQ became very popular online. The original clip was from November 1, 2016. In it, Hacker T. Dog said to Lauren, "We're just normal men... We're just innocent men." This made Lauren laugh and break character. Hacker's puppeteer, Phil Fletcher, later explained that he just made up the line to make Lauren laugh. There was no special context before it.
Radio Career and Writing
Lauren started her radio career in July 2018. She began by covering weekend shows on Capital FM. From January 2019 until September 2023, she presented Capital FM's Capital Early Breakfast show.
In November 2023, it was announced that Lauren would join BBC Radio 1. She presented the Friday morning Early Breakfast show throughout January 2024. Then, in March 2024, it was confirmed that Lauren would join Radio 1 permanently. Since April 7, 2024, she has been co-presenting the station's Life Hacks programme with Shanequa Paris from Newsround.
Besides presenting, Lauren is also an author. She has written for the Top of the Pops magazine. Her first children's novel, Indi Raye is Totally Faking It, was published in 2023.
Personal Life and Advocacy
Lauren Layfield is married to Luke Beddows. He is a writer and helped create the TV series Class Dismissed.
Throughout her career, Lauren has spoken out about the importance of talking about mental health and looking after your well-being. She has given talks to students. She is also an ambassador for the charity YoungMinds. This charity helps young people with their mental health. Lauren even raised money for YoungMinds during her first appearance on Celebrity Mastermind.
