Laurence Humphreys (born around 1571 – died July 7, 1591) was an English Catholic martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for their beliefs. Laurence was born in Hampshire, England, into a Protestant family.

Early Life and Faith

Laurence grew up in a time when religious beliefs were very important. He spent a lot of time reading the Bible and other religious books. He also showed great kindness to others.

He would visit people who were sick or in prison. He also helped teach others about his faith. These actions are known as "Works of Mercy."

Becoming a Catholic

When Laurence was about 18 years old, he met with a local priest. After several meetings, the priest helped him decide to become a Catholic. This was a big decision, as being Catholic was not always easy in England at that time.

Facing Challenges

Because of his strong Catholic faith, Laurence faced difficulties. He was arrested and taken to jail in Winchester. At his trial, he was accused of saying things that were not allowed.

Even though he said he didn't remember saying these things, he accepted the consequences. He was willing to face punishment for his actions and beliefs.

His Legacy

Laurence Humphreys was later honored for his strong faith. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929. To be beatified means the Catholic Church recognizes someone as "Blessed" because of their holy life.

His feast day is celebrated every year on July 7. He is remembered as a brave young man who stood firm in his beliefs.
