Early Life and Education
Lauri Love grew up in Stradishall, Suffolk, England. His parents, Alexander and Sirkka-Liisa Love, both worked at a prison nearby. His mother is from Finland, so Lauri has citizenship in both the United Kingdom and Finland.
After finishing high school, Lauri worked for a short time. He then went to Finland and served in the Finnish Army for six months. After that, he chose to do another six months of public service instead of more military duty.
He later started studying at the University of Nottingham in England. However, he left during his second term because of health problems. He then tried studying at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Again, he left in his second year due to health reasons. While at Glasgow, he took part in a student protest in 2011.
Computer Activity Claims
In January 2013, a website belonging to the United States government was changed. A video appeared there, protesting how another activist, Aaron Swartz, had been treated. The video claimed that those responsible had found secret information from US government groups. This information was kept secret and never fully released.
Later, the United States claimed that Lauri Love was involved in these computer activities. They said he had accessed many computer systems in the US and other places. These systems included networks of government agencies. The US claimed that large amounts of private information were taken. Because of these claims, the United States asked for Lauri Love to be sent to their country. This process is called extradition.
Extradition Hearing
Lauri Love had a hearing in London in June 2016. This hearing was to decide if he should be sent to the United States. His father told the court that Lauri has autism. He said that Lauri was diagnosed with autism when he was an adult.
A psychologist named Simon Baron-Cohen also spoke at the hearing. He had diagnosed Lauri with autism in 2012. The psychologist said that Lauri should not be sent to the US because of his health conditions. These conditions included autism, eczema, and depression. Lauri had told the psychologist that he would harm himself if he was sent away.
Lauri Love also spoke at the hearing. He lived at home with his parents at the time. A group called the Courage Foundation supported him. The court case was put on hold for a while.
On 16 September 2016, a judge decided that Lauri Love could be sent to the United States. However, Lauri's lawyer said they would appeal this decision. On 5 February 2018, a higher court agreed with Lauri's appeal. The judges decided that sending him to the US would be too difficult for him because of his physical and mental health. So, he was not sent to the United States.
Personal Life
In the late 2010s, Lauri Love was in a long-term relationship with Sylvia Mann, who is a fashion model.
