Lavoy Allen (born February 4, 1989) is an American former professional basketball player. He was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft. He was the 50th player picked overall.

Lavoy Allen did not play much organized basketball until he was in eighth grade. He went to Pennsbury High School and later played college basketball at Temple University. While at Temple, his team made it to the NCAA tournament all four years he played there. He was known for his strong defense and rebounding. His coach, Fran Dunphy, once said that Lavoy "might be the smartest player I've ever coached."

Early Life and Basketball Beginnings

Lavoy Allen was born in Trenton, New Jersey on February 4, 1989. When he was nine years old, he moved to Morrisville, Pennsylvania. He found it hard to make new friends at first.

He did not play much organized basketball until he was in eighth grade. Lavoy admitted that he wasn't very good when he started. He focused on passing the ball to teammates who were better players. He was motivated to improve because other kids made fun of him for being tall but not being able to dunk. He said he "could barely jump over the Sunday paper" back then!

High School Basketball Career

Lavoy went to Pennsbury High School. He played on the varsity team starting in his sophomore year. As a junior, he averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game. He was named one of the top 150 players in his age group.

In his final year of high school, Lavoy averaged 13 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals per game. His team reached the second round of the state playoffs. Lavoy was also named to the Second Team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania. He tried out for the USA Under-19 basketball team but did not make the final roster.

Experts ranked him as one of the best centers in his class. On November 8, 2006, Lavoy decided to play college basketball for Temple University.

College Basketball Journey

Lavoy Allen played for the Temple Owls from 2007 to 2011. He was a key player for the team throughout his college career.

Freshman Year (2007–2008)

As a freshman, Lavoy was expected to help Temple with rebounding and scoring inside. In his first college game, he scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. He scored in double figures in six games in a row early in the season. His season high was 20 points in a win against UMass.

Temple finished the season with a 21–13 record. They made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001. In the first round, they lost to Michigan State. In that game, Lavoy had 13 points and 11 rebounds, which is called a double-double. He led his team in blocks with 52 for the season. He was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team.

Sophomore Year (2008–2009)

In his second year, Lavoy's scoring average went up to 10.9 points per game. He led the team in blocks again. He was also the team's best rebounder, averaging 9.0 rebounds per game, which was third in the Atlantic 10 conference. He had 14 double-doubles during the season.

Lavoy helped Temple win its second straight Atlantic 10 Tournament title. This earned them another spot in the NCAA Tournament. He was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Third Team and the All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Team.

Junior Year (2009–2010)

As a junior, Lavoy averaged 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. This meant he averaged a double-double, which was the first time a Temple player had done that since 1970–71! He also led Temple in field goal percentage. In one game, he scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds.

Temple had a great season, winning 29 games and sharing the Atlantic 10 conference regular season championship. They also won their third straight Atlantic 10 conference tournament title. This gave them an automatic spot in the NCAA tournament. Lavoy was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Team.

After this season, Lavoy thought about entering the 2010 NBA draft early. However, he decided to return to Temple for his senior year to work on his offensive skills.

Senior Year (2010–2011)

Before his senior year, Lavoy was named to the USA Select team. He was also on watchlists for important college player awards. He continued to be a strong player, getting many double-doubles. In February 2011, Lavoy became Temple's all-time leading rebounder, passing Johnny Baum. He scored a career-high 24 points in his final regular season game.

Temple finished with a 26–8 record and made it to the NCAA tournament again. They won their first game before losing in double overtime. In his last game as a Temple Owl, Lavoy had 12 points and 11 rebounds. He was named the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Year.

For his college career, Lavoy had 1,147 rebounds and scored 1,421 points. His coach, Fran Dunphy, said Lavoy was "the smartest player I've ever coached" because of his understanding of the game.

Professional Basketball Career

After a great college career, Lavoy Allen moved on to play professional basketball.

NBA Draft and Early Career (2011)

On April 1, 2011, Lavoy played in the Reese's College All-Star Game. He scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Philadelphia 76ers drafted him with the 50th pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He was the first Temple player to be drafted since 2006.

Before joining the NBA, Lavoy signed a contract with Strasbourg IG in France in July 2011. He played nine games there, averaging 10.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. When the NBA lockout ended, he left France to join the 76ers.

Philadelphia 76ers (2011–2014)

Lavoy made his NBA debut with the 76ers on January 7, 2012. He started seeing more playing time when other players were injured. He scored a season-high 15 points in one game and grabbed 12 rebounds in another. In his first NBA season, he averaged 4.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

In the playoffs, Lavoy's playing time increased. He started as center in the first playoff game. He helped the 76ers beat the Boston Celtics in a close game by hitting a key shot. He was important in guarding Celtics star Kevin Garnett. The 76ers pushed the series to seven games but eventually lost.

In July 2012, Lavoy re-signed with the 76ers. He started most games in his second season because of injuries to other players. He averaged 5.8 points and 5.0 rebounds. In his third season with the 76ers, he mostly played as a backup power forward. He averaged 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in 51 games.

Indiana Pacers (2014–2017)

In February 2014, Lavoy Allen was traded to the Indiana Pacers. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in his first games with the Pacers. He scored 13 points against his old team, the 76ers, in March.

Lavoy re-signed with the Pacers in July 2014 and again in July 2015. He often played as a backup power forward. In his first full season with the Pacers, he averaged 5.0 points and 5.1 rebounds. He was very good at getting offensive rebounds for his team. In June 2017, the Pacers decided not to keep him, making him a free agent.

Later Career (2018–2019)

In February 2018, Lavoy joined the Northern Arizona Suns in the NBA G League. In his second game, he had 14 points and 12 rebounds. He averaged 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the season.

In August 2018, Lavoy was chosen by the Capital City Go-Go in the G League expansion draft. He signed with the Washington Wizards for training camp in September but was later waived. He then joined the Capital City Go-Go, which is the Wizards' G League team.
