Lavoy Allen (born February 4, 1989) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a power forward and center. Lavoy was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft. He was the 50th player picked overall.

Lavoy didn't start playing much basketball until he was in eighth grade. He went to Pennsbury High School and later played college basketball at Temple University. At Temple, his team made it to the NCAA tournament every year he played. He was known for being a great rebounder and defender. His coach, Fran Dunphy, even said Lavoy might be the smartest player he ever coached!

Early Life and First Steps in Basketball

Lavoy Allen was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on February 4, 1989. When he was nine, his family moved to Morrisville, Pennsylvania. It was tough for him to make new friends at first.

He didn't play much organized basketball until he was in eighth grade. Lavoy shared that he wasn't very good when he started. He focused on passing the ball to his teammates who were better players. His first reason for wanting to play well was that other kids made fun of him for being tall but not being able to dunk! He said, "I could barely jump over the Sunday paper."

High School Basketball Journey

Lavoy went to Pennsbury High School. In ninth grade, he decided he wanted to be a great basketball player. He started practicing a lot more. By his sophomore year, he was a starter on the varsity team.

As a junior, he averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game. In his senior year, he averaged 13 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals per game. Pennsbury High School made it to the second round of the state playoffs with Lavoy.

He committed to play for Temple University on November 8, 2006. He chose Temple over other colleges like Rutgers and Saint Joseph's.

College Career Highlights

Lavoy Allen played college basketball for the Temple Owls from 2007 to 2011. He was a very important player for the team.

Freshman Year Success

In his first year, Lavoy was expected to help Temple with rebounding and scoring. In his very first college game, he scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. He scored double-digit points in six games in a row early in the season.

Temple finished the season with 21 wins and 13 losses. They made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001. In their first tournament game, Lavoy had his first "double-double" with 13 points and 11 rebounds. A double-double means getting double-digit numbers in two different stats, like points and rebounds. He led his team in blocks that year.

Sophomore Year Growth

As a sophomore, Lavoy's scoring went up to 10.9 points per game. He also led the team in blocks again. He was great at rebounding, getting 9.0 rebounds per game, which was third best in his conference. He had 14 double-doubles this season!

He helped Temple win their second straight Atlantic 10 Tournament title. This also meant they got to go to the NCAA tournament again.

On February 28, 2010, Lavoy had a career-high 21 rebounds in a game against La Salle. This was the most rebounds by a Temple player since 1973! He also scored his 1,000th career point during this season.

Temple had a fantastic season with 29 wins and 5 losses. They won their conference tournament for the third year in a row. This earned them a spot in the NCAA tournament. Lavoy was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team and Defensive Team.

After this season, Lavoy thought about entering the 2010 NBA draft. But he decided to go back to Temple for his senior year to work on his skills.

Before his senior year, Lavoy was named to the USA Select team. He was also on watchlists for top college player awards. On February 20, 2011, Lavoy became Temple's all-time leading rebounder! He passed Johnny Baum's record of 1,042 rebounds.

Temple finished with 26 wins and 8 losses in Lavoy's senior season. They made it to the NCAA tournament again. In his final game as a Temple Owl, Lavoy had 12 points and 11 rebounds. He won the Robert V. Geasey Trophy as the best player in the Philadelphia Big Five.
