Lawrence Edward Moten (born March 25, 1972 – died September 30, 2025) was a talented American professional basketball player. He played for teams like the Vancouver Grizzlies and Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before turning professional, he was an amazing college basketball player for the Syracuse Orange. He even became their all-time leading scorer!

His Basketball Journey

Early Life and College Success

Lawrence Moten grew up in Washington, D.C.. He attended Archbishop Carroll High School and later the New Hampton School. He then went on to play college basketball at Syracuse University.

At Syracuse, Lawrence was a star guard and forward. He scored an incredible 2,334 points during his college career. This made him the highest-scoring player in Syracuse history! He also set a record for the Big East Conference, scoring 1,405 points.

Lawrence was known for consistently scoring. He scored double-digit points in 118 out of 121 games. He was the only player in Syracuse history to score 500 or more points in four seasons in a row. He also led Syracuse in scoring for three straight seasons, a feat not achieved since Hall of Famer Dave Bing.

Professional Career

In 1995, the Vancouver Grizzlies chose Lawrence in the NBA draft. He played for the Grizzlies for two seasons, from 1995 to 1997. He also played a short time for the Washington Wizards in the 1997–98 season.

After his time in the NBA, Lawrence continued to play basketball. He played in other leagues like the CBA and the ABA. He even played basketball internationally in countries like Spain and Venezuela.

Life After Playing

Lawrence Moten stayed involved with basketball after his playing days. He became the vice president of player development for the Maryland Nighthawks in the ABA. In 2014, he coached the Rochester Razorsharks and led them to win their fourth PBL championship title.

Later, Lawrence worked with middle school students in central New York. He helped young people in his community. He had two daughters with his wife, Noelene.

Lawrence Moten passed away in Washington, D.C., on September 30, 2025, at the age of 53. He is remembered for his amazing basketball skills and his contributions to the sport.
