Lawrence Municipal Airport (IATA: LWC, ICAO: KLWC, FAA LID: LWC) is a public airport. It is located about three miles north of Lawrence, in Douglas County, Kansas. This airport is mostly used for general aviation. This means it handles private planes, small charter flights, and flight training. It does not serve large commercial airlines. The airport first opened on October 14, 1929. It has more than 120 flights every day.
About Lawrence Municipal Airport
The airport covers an area of 486 acres (about 197 hectares). It sits at an elevation of 833 feet (254 meters) above sea level.
Runways and Buildings
Lawrence Municipal Airport has two main runways. Runway 15/33 is 5,700 feet (1,737 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) wide. It is made of asphalt. Runway 1/19 is 3,901 feet (1,189 meters) long and 75 feet (23 meters) wide. This runway is made of concrete.
In 2008, the airport had 32,700 aircraft operations. This means planes took off or landed about 89 times each day. Most of these flights (93%) were general aviation. About 6% were air taxi flights, which are like small, on-demand plane services. Less than 1% were military flights.
At that time, 56 aircraft were based at the airport. Most of these (91%) were single-engine planes. A smaller number were multi-engine planes (5%), jet planes (2%), and helicopters (2%).
Future Plans
In July 2019, the city of Lawrence approved a big construction project. This project cost $2.1 million. It was planned to be finished by the end of 2019. The project included building a large new hangar and an office. A hangar is a large building where aircraft are stored or repaired. This new construction was designed to encourage more private planes to use the airport.
