Lawrence Edward Reade (born November 8, 1846 – died August 17, 1910) was a talented New Zealand cricketer. He played in important matches called first-class cricket for teams like Canterbury and Otago between 1869 and 1877.

Lawrence Reade's Early Life

Lawrence Reade was born in Gorakhpur, India. His father, Edward Anderton Reade, worked for a big company called the East India Company. This company was very important in India at the time.

One of Lawrence's uncles was a famous writer named Charles Reade. Lawrence went to school at Tonbridge School in Kent, England. In 1869, he moved to New Zealand. He finished his studies to become a lawyer in Dunedin. In 1873, he moved to Oamaru, and by 1875, he officially became a lawyer.

Lawrence Reade's Cricket Career

Lawrence Reade was a good all-around cricketer. He was a batsman, meaning he hit the ball. He was also a "right-hand medium-paced bowler," which means he threw the ball to try and get players out. People said he had a "graceful delivery" when he bowled.

In a game for Otago against Canterbury in 1870-71, he was the top scorer in both parts of the game. He scored 33 runs and then 22 runs. He also had the best bowling results for Otago, taking 4 wickets for 73 runs.

His highest score was 38 runs against Canterbury in 1873-74. In that game, he and another player made a great team, scoring 96 runs together. This was impressive because Canterbury's whole team only scored 116 runs in both their turns at bat!

Later, in 1876-77, a strong English team led by James Lillywhite played against Southland. Lawrence Reade was the captain for Southland. Even though Southland lost quickly, Lawrence was still their best scorer in both parts of the game, with 8 and 10 runs.

He loved cricket so much that he continued to play and even became an umpire for the rest of his life.

Later Life and Family

Lawrence Reade married Margaret Hannah Booth in Oamaru on March 15, 1876. They lived in many different places in New Zealand and Australia.

Lawrence was elected mayor of East Invercargill in 1884. This means he was the main leader of that town. Later, he worked in important legal roles in the Supreme Courts of Tasmania and New South Wales in Australia.

Eventually, Lawrence and Margaret settled in Foxton, in the Manawatu region of New Zealand. There, Lawrence worked as a solicitor, which is another type of lawyer.

They had three sons. Margaret passed away on August 14, 1908, when she was 60 years old. On July 2, 1910, while visiting one of his sons in Wellington, Lawrence had an accident involving a tram. He passed away on August 17, 1910, due to injuries from the accident.
