History of Lawrenceville
How Lawrenceville Got Its Name
Lawrenceville was named after Joseph Lawrence. He was the community's first postmaster, which means he was in charge of the local post office. Joseph Lawrence also generously donated the land for a school called the Lawrenceville Male and Female Academy.
The Lawrenceville Academy
A post office operated in Lawrenceville from 1849 to 1905. The Lawrenceville Academy was officially recognized by the Alabama Legislature (the group of people who make laws for Alabama) on January 22, 1858. Even though it was officially recognized in 1858, records show the school was actually open and teaching students before 1830. The academy had to close during the Civil War and then closed permanently in 1888.
Community Support in the Past
Even though some people disagreed with the Compromise of 1850 (a set of laws passed in the U.S. to deal with slavery issues), a meeting was held in Lawrenceville to show support for it.
