The Story of Lawton
Lawton was officially planned and marked out in 1901. It was named after J. C. Law, who was an early settler in the area. He originally came from Lawton, Michigan. A post office has been open in Lawton since 1902, helping people send and receive mail.

The city covers a total area of about 0.71 square miles (1.86 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Lawton is located about seven miles east of Sioux City, Iowa. It sits along U.S. Route 20. The area around Lawton has rolling hills and very fertile farmland. Many people who live in Lawton work in Sioux City, making it a "bedroom community."
