Leberkäse facts for kids
Leberkäse is a special kind of meat dish, a bit like a meatloaf. You might also hear it called Leberkäs or Fleischkäse. This tasty food comes from southern Germany, but it's also very popular in Austria and Switzerland.
It's usually made from ingredients like corned beef, sometimes pork, bacon, and onions. These ingredients are ground up until they are very, very fine. Then, they are pressed into loaf shapes and baked in an oven. The baking gives Leberkäse a delicious brown crust on the outside.

What does "Leberkäse" mean?
The name "Leberkäse" literally means "liver-cheese" in German. This can be a bit confusing! That's because, in a region called Bavaria in Germany, this dish usually doesn't have any cheese or liver in it at all.
Some language experts think the word Leberkäse might come from the old German word Laib. This word means "loaf," which makes sense because Leberkäse is baked in a loaf shape.
What's inside Leberkäse?
In Germany, there are special rules about what can be called Leberkäse. If it's called "Bavarian Leberkäse," it doesn't need to have any liver. However, most other types of Leberkäse must contain at least 4% liver.
Some local kinds of Leberkäse need even more liver. For example, "Stuttgarter Leberkäse" must have at least 5% liver in it. So, what's inside can depend on where it comes from!
How to enjoy Leberkäse
There are many yummy ways to eat Leberkäse:
- One popular way is to cut it into thick slices. These warm slices are then put into a semmel (a type of bread roll). People often add mustard to it. This snack is called a Leberkässemmel and is a common fast food in Bavaria and Austria.
- You can also pan-fry the slices until they are browned. When served this way, Leberkäse often comes with a fried egg and German potato salad. This is a classic meal, especially in a Biergarten.
- Leberkäse can also be eaten cold. It's often sliced very thinly and used to make different kinds of sandwiches.
