Leduck Island, also spelled LeDuck Island, is a small island in the United States Virgin Islands. It is located about half a mile (0.8 km) east of Sabbat Point in Johns Folly. The Sabbat Channel separates it from the larger island of Saint John.
Leduck Island sits right at the entrance to Coral Bay. It rises about 85 feet (26 meters) above the sea. This island is an important part of the beautiful Virgin Islands National Park. It is one of the biggest islands found offshore from Saint John, along with Grass Cay and Congo Cay.
Amazing Marine Life
Leduck Island is a very popular spot for scuba diving. This is because it has many special underwater structures called "spur and groove reefs." These reefs are like underwater cities for sea creatures.
Fish Species
The reefs around Leduck Island are home to many different kinds of tropical fish. Many of these fish are endemic, meaning they are found only in this area.
Some of the cool fish you might see here include:
- The colorful Fairy basslet
- The striped Sergeant major
- Beautiful angelfish like the French angelfish and Gray angelfish
- The unique Queen triggerfish and Jackknife-fish
- Tiny Blue chromis and bigger Schoolmaster snapper
- The tasty Mangrove snapper and Red hind
Other Sea Creatures
Besides fish, you might also spot some larger animals. Blacktip sharks sometimes swim in these waters. You could also see the amazing Hawksbill sea turtle. Other smaller fish like Glassy sweepers and Squirrelfish are common. Many types of damsels and jacks also live here.
