Leguísamo is a special kind of neighborhood, called a barrio, located in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 2,096 people lived there.
A Look at Leguísamo's Past
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because Spain gave Puerto Rico to the U.S. in 1898, as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory. This means it's part of the U.S. but isn't a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,228 people lived in the Leguísamo barrio at that time.
