Leipziger Land was a district in the German state of Saxony. It was located southwest of the big city of Leipzig. The city of Leipzig has its own government and is separate from the district.
History of Leipziger Land
This district was created in 1994. It was formed by joining three older districts: Leipzig, Borna, and Geithain.
The area south of Leipzig City is famous for its large lignite mining sites. Lignite is a type of soft brown coal. In the future, many of these mining areas will be turned into beautiful lakes. This change will create new places for people to enjoy nature and water sports.
The lignite mining industry was very important here. It helped make the Leipzig area the biggest industrial region in what was once East Germany.
Symbols: The Coat of Arms
The district of Leipziger Land had its own special symbol, called a coat of arms. This symbol tells a story about the area's history.
- The lion on the right side of the shield is a symbol of the Counts of Meißen. These were important rulers in the region long ago.
- The blue stripes at the bottom are symbols of Landsberg.
- Both the lion and the blue stripes can also be seen in the coat of arms of the city of Leipzig. This shows a connection between the district and the city.
- On the left side, there is a wavy line on a green background. This wavy line stands for the Weiße Elster river, which flows through the area.

- Borna (which was the capital)
- Markkleeberg
